Silly name yes, but this is what I remember calling these when I was a kid — except my mom used to braid them and put them up higher. Either way, that’s what I’ll call them. They start out similar to the post I did on the Madonna ponytails but they are wrapped just a little different. Either way works to wrap the base of the ponytail, so whatever is easiest for you. I do think, however, the way these lay, you’ll get a better look if you just use the hair you haven’t pulled through the elastic. It might look weird in the middle of the loop to have that section of hair pulled out like you do on the above mentioned ponytails.
Step 1 – Part hair down the middle & Make 2 low ponytails
I think these look best if they are not up real high, but rather down further on the head so they don’t stick off the head sort of funny.
Step 2 – On the last wrap of the rubber band don’t pull all the hair through (like you’re making a messy pony).
Leave the hair like this next pic shows.
Step 3 – Wrap loose hair around rubber band base
I then took the loose hair and got it all smooth and damp and pulled it up and towards the middle of her head wrapping it around the rubber band as I went.
Step 4 – Fasten wrapped hair inside loop with a tiny claw clip.
Step 5 – Secure loop with bobby pins
Then, to ensure her little “U” shaped doggy ear didn’t just sag and hang funny, I fanned it out a bit, making sure it was all smooth as well, and then bobby pinned the inside of the loop to the hair on her head. I did it to both the inside of the loop (closest to her part) and the outside (closest to her ear.) I tried not to get all the hair in the bobby pins so they couldn’t be seen on the inside of the loop. By bobby pinning them it allows them to keep the loop shape and be a bit more 3D than if they were to just hang normally. Just a personal preference I guess!
Optional Step 6 – Add curls up front
And as I like to do to add a little “pretty,” I put little ringlets on each side up front in her hair.
Here’s Bug at the end of the day after playing with her Dad and sisters. Some of her shorter hairs started to fly away a bit on the bottom of the loops, but nothing that a bit more hairspray couldn’t fix!
