Years ago we posted our Uneven Rope Braid/Twist tutorial and I’ve always loved the unique look they have. Much like an uneven 3 strand braid, it’s awesome to just change one little thing about a basic hair technique to get such a cool and different look. Once again, we’ve taken a few basic techniques and joined them together to create a beautiful hairstyle.
Step 1 – Make off center part on the right side of the head, then part from ear to ear
Step 2 – On the left side, part out a small section of hair near the forehead
Step 3 – Divide that small section into 2 uneven pieces – the top or right piece of hair should be thin, and the bottom or left piece should be thick
Step 4 – Pass the thicker bottom section of hair over the top thinner section so they change places
Step 5 – Now pass the bottom thin section back to the top
Step 6 – Drop the thicker section that is now on bottom and add hair to it
Step 7 – Then pass that section back to the top position, so the thinner strand is now on bottom. Do not add hair to the thinner section of hair
Step 8 – Pass the thin section of hair back to the top
Step 9 – Drop the bottom thicker section again and add more hair to it
Step 10 – Continue this process of only adding hair to the thick section of hair each time it is on the bottom or left position
Step 11 – Once you run out of hair to add near the ear, just continue the uneven rope braid/twist with the strands of hair
Step 12 – Temporarily secure the end with a clip to the hair in back so it doesn’t unwind
Step 13 – Repeat the same process on the right side of the head – using one thick and one thin section of hair to make the twist.
Step 14- Join the twists together in back and secure with an elastic
Step 15 – Curl remaining hair if desired.
FINISHED!
We’ve also done this wrapping clear around the head instead of leaving hair down in back. It gets to be a bit harder to hold the hair when the sections are so uneven though. We’ll have to share pictures of that another time. Here’s a little bit closer up look at the twist:
If you need a refresher on a rope twist, or our uneven rope twists, you can check out our tutorial and video HERE. And for all of our uneven braids and twists click HERE.
Or to make a regular French rope twist, try our beautiful French Twisted Updo where we add hair to both sections as we twist. It’s gorgeous as well!
Super cute! Thanks for the tutorial!
I had tried repeatedly to do something like this for my girls hair. Thanks for the step-by-step tutorial to make it so easy to understand!
How adorable! I love this and I bet my nieces would love this too. I’ll have to save for when I have kids. These are all such cute and fun ideas.
