Quick & Easy Messy Bun – My Way

If you’ve been with me from the beginning, you know that I really like messy buns, but never seemed to like how mine turned out – so avoided them all together. Maybe you’re saying, “It’s a messy bun — it’s supposed to look messy & there’s no right way they should look.” Right? Wrong? Well, right, but I just didn’t like the “messy” look mine got — so after trying everyone’s that has ever posted a tut’ on messy buns I had sort of resigned myself to being a non-messy bun kind of gal. But over the last couple months I decided to start messing (no pun intended) around with them again. Also, if you know me – I seem to use bobby pins A LOT. Some people don’t like them, and if you don’t – this won’t be the post for you. But this is what has worked for me. But as a sidenote – I seem to get cuter & better messy buns on Goose – with her shorter hair than I do on Bug. Her’s seem to not get the same look so I don’t do them as often on her.

Anyway – it’s not rocket science here, but this is MY Way! Right or wrong – it works for me.

Make your basic ponytail. This one is on the side. And as always – I think these work better from the start if the hair is damp or wet.And btw – she’s sporting a fabulous headband from Every Little Detail. (If you haven’t guessed I’m loving her stuff — this is the headband that her beautiful model is sporting on her home page & I fell in love with it!) These things are awesome. They aren’t your typical elastic type headband that squeezes your head & gives you a headache – they’ve got a new & innovative adjustable slide on them – so they fit my girlies or me just great. Pretty cool huh? You probably could put the headband on after you’ve got the hair all done, but I just wanted it in place from the start.Depending on if you have room in your rubberband on the last time through with the ponytail, only pull it out half way. Most of the time though, I like to make the full ponytail & then take a heavy duty clear rubberband and do the half pull through to make it look like this:Then comes the non-exactness of this. (sorry!) I grab little sections (I guess they are little loops) of hair and pull them up – anchoring them to her head, with, yes, a bobby pin. Acutally I tend to make an X with the bobbypins to ensure it stays put.This one was with her hair drying a bit & I hadn’t stuck another pin in to make an X. I usually pull 3 or 4 different sections up like this and anchor them with bobby pins. So it’s almost like the bun is divided into 3 or 4 sections that are bobby pinned up, and the same amount stay down. Does that make sense?

This is the last little loop I was securing.So this is the look I get in the end. When her hair is dry, depending on the hair style, I’ll curl up those little spiky ends that are sticking out from below the whole bun. This gives it a bit fancier touch.Anyway – this is how I get my messy buns. I’d tried putting all the rubberbands in this way & that way way and that turned out to be a nightmare getting them out or repositioning them if I didn’t like the way it looked. I really love Jenn’s messy buns, but try as I may, I’m just dumb & can’t get my fingers to work right & they don’t look the way hers do — so this is my way! But like I said, if you aren’t a bobby pin lover or they don’t seem to work for you, I guess this won’t either. Sorry!

Hopefully in this one you can sort of see how it’s divided up into sections– I start by leaving a bit down on the left side – then pull 1 up. Then leave “2 down” and pull “2 up”, etc. Like I mentioned before – I usually have about 3 or 4 sections up & down — but it’s not exact. Just pin it until you like the look of it.With the headband you can add a flower to the side …Or to the back by the bun ….

But either way – she loves these.
