We’re so excited to share this tutorial today since it’s the first one we’ve posted since Bee got about 13″ of hair cut. This hairstyle is really one that can be done on short or long hair which is an added bonus.
Bee actually is the one that came up with the idea for this. I had started doing a lace braid one day in her hair and she asked if there was any way I could turn it into a fishbone braid at the end. So this easy style stems from her request and I really love how it turned out. You can pancake this style to make it have a more “grown-up” or messy appearance if you like, so there are several optional looks you can get from this style.
This obviously isn’t a style that is overly complicated or time consuming. You just need to know the basic braids and you can make this. Check out our video showing how we do it:
Step 1 – Make an off-center part on the right
Step 2 – Plait a lace braid
As a reminder, a lace braid is a French braid where you add hair only to one side. In this style, we add hair to the right side (or top) of the braid.
Step 3 – Braid back to the crown and stop adding hair
Step 4 – Divide middle strand of braid in half
After you divide the middle strand of the braid in 2 pieces, add one half to the left section and one half to the right section of the braid. This will give you the two strands of hair necessary to create a fishbone braid.
Step 5 – Begin a fishbone braid

Step 6 – Secure the end with an elastic
FINISHED!
