As the Fall and the cooler weather are quickly approaching, it has me doing hairstyles that keep the hair more contained. This helps avoid major knots from a windy & blustery day, and it helps as well once hats start needing to be worn. This banded bun hairstyle is one such style that is perfect for days like that. It’s also great for sports or when you want to add a pop of color to a hairstyle.
For this hairstyle, you will need:
** Ponytail holder or heavy duty elastic for a ponytail
** Colored elastics (lots of them!)
** Bobby pins
Step 1 – Make a ponytail
Step 2 – Divide the ponytail into 4 even sections
Depending on how much hair, and the length of hair you’re working with, you can do more or less of these, but I recommend starting at least with 4 sections.
Step 3 – Starting on the first section of hair, wrap a colored elastic rather close to the base of your ponytail
Step 4 – Gently tug a little on the hair just above the colored elastic to puff it out a little
Step 5 – Add another elastic about 1 1/2 inches below the elastic you added in Step 3
Add the same color elastic, or do whatever pattern of colors you desire. You can add ones for the current holiday, your favorite sports team, your school colors, or something to match the outfit you’re wearing. This is what makes the style your own!
Step 6 – Gently tug on the hair between the 2 elastics to puff the hair out a little
Step 7- Continue adding elastics about 1 1/2 inches apart & continue to puff the hair out between them so it makes a “bubble ponytail”
I only made the “bubbles” of hair between the elastics a little puffy, but you can pull on them as much as you want. I just didn’t want the hair to be straight sections of hair with elastics wrapped around them. You’re bun will be a bit fuller if you create the “bubbles.”
Step 8 – Once you can no longer add elastics, move on to the next section of hair in the ponytail and repeat the above process to the last 3 sections of hair
Step 9 – Begin wrapping each banded section into a bun and secure with bobby pins
This is where this style isn’t exact. Just try to wrap them so you can’t see the base of your main ponytail, and that you can see a lot of the elastics peeking through.
TIP:
To remove the elastics once you’re ready to take out the hairstyle, we found THESE Cutter Combs to be fantastic. Or be sure to check out our post where we show other ways to easily remove elastics.
FINISHED!
We did this style a couple times, and actually added the elastics in different patterns to see how they would turn out. One time we had the same color elastics running all the way down a section of hair, so two sections had blue and the other 2 sections had yellow elastics. Another time, we alternated blue yellow blue yellow down each section, and in the end I preferred how that looked once the bun was wrapped, as seen below.
