Quite some time ago I received a hairstyle request from one one of my readers and I’ve had the picture she e-mailed me stashed away in my files. The picture is from a Hanna Andersson catalog I believe, and the little girl in the picture is just too cute for words! While this style isn’t too hard — it is, however, extra extra cute! You could mix this up with a variety of braids or buns, but we opted to stick with what the picture had.
Step 1 – Divide hair down the middle
While you can’t see the picture from behind, I’m guessing it’s just a straight part from the forehead to the nape of the neck. We opted for an off-center part in front leading to a zig zag part in back.
Step 2 – Make 2 ponytails
Step 3 – Make a braid
With a small section from the left ponytail make a braid and secure the end temporarily.
Step 4 – Drape the braid
Bring the braid around the front of the head to the other ponytail. If your hair is shorter you may just have to pull it directly across to the other ponytail. But if you have the length, you want the braid further forward so it can be seen more from up front so don’t pull it tight.
Step 5 – Secure the braid
With another rubber band, secure the end of the braid to the ponytail on the right. Also, remove the little rubber band from the end of your braid so it won’t be seen in the messy bun.
** Side note: Because of the angle I pulled the braid on the front of her head, the braid on the left side gaped out a bit from the head. To ensure it didn’t give me issues once I started the messy bun, I tacked it down with a bobby pin.
Step 6 – Make 2 messy buns
We made our long hair messy buns, which start by making a rope braid. You can watch our long hair messy bun HERE. Make one on each side with your ponytails.
Finished!
Compared to the picture submitted by our reader, we put the messy buns up a little higher. When I make low buns or things closer to the nape of the neck, the girls sometimes complain that the bobby pins bug them, so I opted for a bit higher bun & not so close to the ear.
