I’m actually hoping to hear from some of you – experiences or tips you can offer up on this. I’ve mentioned many times before that Bug is starting to get some funky curl/waves at the back of her hair that it making me crazy! I don’t know why – it just is. Funny enough, Goose was born with curls, as was Bee (as you’ve seen.) But Bug was born with stick straight hair – and for a while I didn’t know what to do with it, because I couldn’t just put a little bit of gel in it and fluff the cute baby curls. Now over the last year, she’s started showing more and more signs of this wave on the inner parts of her hair. Let me show you….
Here is Bug’s hair fresh out of the bath & just a bit towel dried. I’ve combed through it to get any tangles out and get it straight looking:
Then if she moves her head at all this is what starts to appear from within the “depths” of her hair:
Then if I “dig” in deeper, this is what is there:
Even more from the side of her head …. waves, waves, waves – or loose curl – what would you call this?!
Fast forward several minutes after we’ve dried it completely. (caught her mid-blink in the mirror I guess!) I just love her hair like this! Looks amazing, wouldn’t you agree?
But …. have her move her head or move a bit of the hair out of the way and this is what you’ll find:
It shows up even more with the flash on I think!
So what in the world is happening?!!! I’ve heard of girls hair texture or type changing as they start going through puberty or whatever – but this is for some reason, just weird to me! Months back I tried putting a bunch of my Garnier Curl Cream stuff in it and blowing it dry with my diffuser, but it looked – um – not so cute – less than impressive! I love for her hair to be straight down in back with a little pulled up in front – but lately this annoying wave keeps peeking through making her look like she’s got bed head or something …. and coming from an obsessed hair Mom – it really annoys me! Don’t get me wrong – I don’t make a big deal out of it to her because I don’t want her thinking this is a bad thing – cuz it’s not. But I have the hardest time making a straight part in the back of her head because of this wave now. It’s just a weird thing that her hair is doing this all of a sudden.
Anyway – has anything like this happened to you or your dd? Any enlightenment you could offer would be great! This just shows you I need hair help too! LOL

My hair is naturally wavy on the underside also, I part my hair so that I am only working on drying the underside I have noticed that when I dry that part directly it helps keep it flatter. I know you dont want to use to much heat on her hair since she is young but I now flat iron my hair, its always an option for a special occasion!

This is the exact same thing that my daughter’s hair does. EXACTLY! Find any way to fix it besides straightening. That is what I end up doing to my daughter;s hair, but she is only 6, so I can’t do it every day.

This is what happened to me when I was little. I’m 20 now, and when I was little I had pin straight hair. As I reached age 9 it started to get frizzy and wavy. By age 13 I had about 75% curls. Now my hair is really curly and really pretty. I didn’t think that your hair texture could change, but I have never died it or gotten highlights. So I guess texture can change!

My daughter had the exact same thing happen to her. She was born with straight hair like me. I am hopeful now that I have read Rachel’s comment. She is 9 now and the complete underside of her hair is almost ringlet curls. But the top half of her hair is still straight as a board. for the past couple of months it has begun to get a wave to it. She hates her hair and wishes it would do one or the other. When she was about 5 she cut her straight pieces off all the way to the scalp…. I was so upset! But she said they were too frizzy. We have used product in her hair and have tried straightening it. It always has curl on the underside. I am open to any suggestions. I just hope and pray it will go all curly… They are beautiful curls on the underside. And now she is at the age that she does not want anything done to it…. I had even cut her hair at one time thinking that it would give it more curl all over with less weight. It didn’t.

My hair did the same thing but i was born with curly hair then it turned stick straight then just the inside turned curly. good luck if the top of her hair stays straight or barely wavy because i cant ever wear my hair natural since the top is straight and the inside is crazy curly

I used to have thick stick straight hair but around 3-4th grade it started getting wavier and wavier. I figured out that if I let my hair air dry over-night in a side ponytail with another hair tie about every inch till the bottom, my hair would be straight when I took my hair out in the morning.

That’s a good idea. I’m going to have to keep that in mind if her hair continues with this wavy trend! Thanks for the info.

The exact opposite happened to me…… as soon as I hit puberty, my hair started to go frizzy around my face. I’m older now, and my hair has pretty good curl to it. Except the bottom half is still stick straight. And it’s about three shades darker than my curly canopy!!! Try using mousse and scrunching it upward a lot while it is still wet. Then don’t touch it ’til its dry. You can let it air dry or use a diffuser attachment on your dryer. NO HEAT!
