In the quest to do fun things with the girls hair for Halloween, I came up with this fun way to make cat ears using Bug’s own hair. I’ve found that pipe cleaner or an 18 gauge cloth covered wire can do fabulous things in hair for this time of year! If you’re wanting your daughter to have a costume that requires “ears” of some kind, this will do the trick!
I pulled hair up from ear to ear and then parted it in the middle. I made 2 ponytails and added pipe cleaner. Wrap it around the base of the pony and twist it so it’s sure to stay. Then bring the long end down into the ponytail. Divide the hair into 3 sections for braiding, pulling the pipe cleaner down into the middle one. Proceed to braid clear to the end. Repeat on the other side.
One regular piece of pipe cleaner was the perfect length for Bug’s braids. Tie the end off with the rubber band like I’ve shown in past posts, so that they don’t stick out all over.
Then form the shape of ears that you want. You have to really pinch the top where it comes to a point otherwise it’s more of a rounded point & not an actual triangle. Make a triangle with each side and then take the remaining braided hair and angle it off towards the other side. Take a tiny claw clip and clamp it down behind the base of the opposite sides ponytail. It almost forms a little braided headband directly on top of the head underneath the ears!
Ta-da! Silly huh?! But add a little animal nose & whiskers and you’re ready to go! If your DD has a bit shorter hair, it might look even better because then the ears aren’t quite as big. I guess you could use these for bunny ears or cat ears.
Or you can completely round them and have them like bear ears or something! Bug thought they were Mickey Mouse ears! I didn’t undo these from the pointed ones I did above. I just reshaped them and left the ends tacked down as is. You could also wrap ribbon around them or add them to the braid in the process as well. I didn’t think of that until now, but that’d be something else to “dress” them up a bit too!
