Last year about this time I did this post where I’d made 3 rope/twist braids and then I had used those 3 twists to make a regular old braid. It had a cool look I thought. Well recently, I found out that if you just take 2 rope/twist braids and then twist them together, it’s called a Hawser braid or twist. It looks really cool I think, and borders on a similar look of a 4 strand braid. So those of you who just can’t get the hang of the 4 strand braid this looks just as cool & is A LOT easier! So last night after Bug’s bath while her hair was still really damp we did a quick run with this.
The trick to this is once you’ve made your 2 rope/twist braids, that you twist the 2 of those backwards from how you normally do your rope/twist braids – otherwise you just are twisting them together and it doesn’t look like anything more than a really thick rope braid. When doing the individual rope/twist braids I first twist the strands to the right – then over each other to the left.
So once the 2 rope braids are done and tied off on the ends like this: (The tighter you make these the better I think it looks.)
That’s when you’ll take them and just do it backwards. So in this case I passed the left strand over the right and so on. Be sure to keep pulling them tight and keep those original 2 strands twisted up tight too. It helps the look for sure! Here’s a look up close.
And the bottom of it. I like it when it’s thinner at the bottom – I think it looks “harder” to have done fore some reason! 🙂 And that’s what we want right — people to think it’s waaaay hard and complicated, but in reality it’s easy peasy! 🙂
Good news — I decided to give my camera test run and the video & these pictures were off it, so it appears we are still in business! Woot Woot! These aren’t the best pictures though cuz it was bedtime and I kept forgetting the flash – but either way, I think the camera isn’t completely ruined, and that’s great news for the pocket book!
I’ve got a few different do’s I’ve been thinking of to do this Hawser braid/twist in , so stay tuned! Hope everyone has got fun plans for the upcoming holiday weekend. I’m just looking forward to having my honey off for the day on Friday! Yeah!
