Over the years we haven’t shared a lot of “messy or loose” styles on our blog because the girls have been younger, and they aren’t really conducive to wearing to school and they tend not to hold up well for recess and sports. But I’m really loving today’s style because it’s one that you can adjust the amount of “messiness” that goes into it, and still get that cool Boho look.
Here’s our quick video showing how it’s done, or we’ve got step-by-step instructions below the video you can also follow.
Step 1 – Part the hair off center back to the crown on the right side
Step 2 – On the left side create a loose French braid
Watch our French Braid video if you need help creating one of those. Add bigger sections of hair to the braid since you want this to be a bit loose. Add hair to both sides until you reach the ear. Then stop adding hair to the bottom or left side of the braid. Only add hair to the top of the French braid as you wind around to the back middle of the head.
Step 3 – Loosen/Pancake the braid
Be careful only to pull on hair that you crossed over in the braid – don’t pull on hair that you added or you’ll get big bumps in your braid.
Step 4 – Stop adding hair once you have braided around to the side part & temporarily clip off the end of the braid
Step 5 – Create a French braid on the right side of the head
Step 6 – As before, stop adding hair to the bottom of the braid once you reach the ear
Step 7 – Add hair to the top of the braid until you reach the center back of the head
Step 8 – Loosen/Pancake the braid
Step 9 – Carefully bring the 2 braids together in the middle back
Step 10 – Begin creating a fishbone braid
Watch our Fishbone/Fishtail Braid video if you need help with these. Hold the hair carefully so your braids from the above steps don’t unravel. However, the hair will turn/twist a little bit as you start the fishbone braid which gives the style a really cool look. It makes it look like French braids wrap around the sides of the head, then turn into rope twists/braids and then go into a fishbone braid.
Step 11 – Loosen/Pancake the fishbone braid as desired and secure the end with an elastic.
Optional – Add beachy waves or additional braids randomly throughout the straight hair below for added texture.
