Over the last many months I’ve been looking for better ways to secure a ponytail on Goose & Bee — especially Goose because her hair is rather thick. I’d started using a regular ponytail holder, along with one of the Goody clear (and very strong!) rubber bands to keep her ponytails from sagging or coming out. So months back I saw some Ponytail Hooks at Sally Beauty Supply and thought I’d try them, but then put them away & forgot about them. Then one day Goose wanted Curlformers in, but wanted them in a ponytail for a change. She wanted them only in her ponytail, which we’d never done before. I was torn with how I was going to secure her ponytail, put in the Curlformers, and then the next day be able to “tidy” up all the hair in front (since she sleeps in the Curlformers) without coming through all the great curls in the ponytail itself. Then I remembered we had ponytail hooks and figured we’d give them a try. Using these I wouldn’t have to pull and pull all her curls in and out of a regular ponytail holder/ rubber band.
I prepped her hair for a ponytail and wrapped the hair with the ponytail hooks instead of a regular rubber band. They were a bit tricky to use at first but they reminded me a lot of those “bobbles” that I know my mom used on me when I was a kid – you know the ones … they are like an open rubber band with a little colored ball on each end that you wrapped around a ponytail?!
The trick with these, however, was just to keep the hooks from hooking her hair when I was still wrapping them around her ponytail. Since her hair was so heavy with the Curlformers in, I opted to put 2 of them in this time.
Since her ponytail is so long, we doubled up on the Curlformers end to end, like we showed recently in our Curlformers Experiment.
The next morning, her ponytail had stayed in nicely, as had the Curlformers. I gently unwrapped the ponytail hooks and smoothed her hair out up front. Then I wrapped the ponytail hooks back around the ponytail and secured them both. (I never let the hair down – I held it in my hand keeping the hair in loose ponytail with my hand.) Then I removed the Curlformers. I opted to hide the hooks by wrapping her ponytail like I recently showed in THIS video. I realize, using our ponytail wrapping technique requires pulling the ponytail through a rubber band which defeats what I was trying to avoid by using the hooks, but I used a very small one that didn’t disturb the curls and I didn’t have to wrap it a ton like I would if I were trying to make an actual ponytail!
In the end, I was happy with the way these hooks secured her ponytail. I don’t know if I were to have to use them on myself how easy they would be, but putting them in Goose’s hair and getting them to lay the way I wanted – it only took me a few tries & then it was no big deal.
Here’s a closer look at the ponytail hooks. They stretch nicely and once you get the ends hooked they hold really well. Depending on what style you are doing, these necessarily wouldn’t work well but they are a great go to if you don’t want a sagging ponytail. We still use our same old “double” rubber band method too, but these are a great alternative to have.
Goose was happy with her curly bouncy “cheerleader ponytail” (as she called it) and I was happy because the ponytail didn’t sag!
Has anyone ever used ponytail hooks, and what has been your experience with them? I’d love to hear!

What a great idea! I’ve often done curlers in a ponytail and wondered if there was a better way of doing it than taking out the elastic and restraighteing it in the morining. I’m gonna try those hooks! Thanks for telling us about it!
(BTW- Goose’s hair looks beautiful.)

I had seen these at Sally’s and wanted to try them but I was afraid they wouldn’t work. I’m glad I ran across your blog. You have some adorable hairstyles and I’m glad I know this works.

Thank you so much for showing these!!! I’ve been wondering how I could put my hair up in a ponytail after I’d already put curls in my hair!!! I’ve also got my order of curlformers on the way, and I definitely plan to use this site for some pointers! Thank you Babes in Hairland!

I am thinking of buying these ,but i dont know whic one are better?Long or extra wide.I have too much hair. And how much is shippng.(by the way i love your does really much )pls answer 🙁

I prefer the long or super long ones because my girls have such long hair. For us, because their hair is long and heavy, the wide ones don’t produce as much of a curl as a wave for us. I like the curls we get from the pink/orange ones. I don’t know how much they charge for shipping. You can e-mail them probably. Or if you have a Sally Beauty supply near you, you can buy them in their store and avoid shipping costs! Hope that helps!

I dont have any store whit theme near but i also like the long and wide ones.I havs little more hair than Goose whit how many ushould sleep whit.is is better if i buy a kit or starter pack?i would like to have curls like Bug :O
The Mom says
If you have more hair than Goose you will do better to have more curlers than a starter pack. If you are only going to use in a ponytail then you probably need a couple starter packs. If you want to put them in your entire head of hair you’ll want to buy a salon pack. If you like the wide long ones that is fine, just know with the weight of your long hair they won’t be as curled (see this old post for an example – http://babesinhairland.com/hairstyles/sideswept-twist-curls/) They turned into more waves and loose curl. If you want tighter curls, go with the pink/orange ones. You can sleep in them or you can use a hair dryer to get them to dry faster. My girls always sleep in them though.

My hair is really big and bouncy .Are they uncomfortable to sleep on or not because in a morning i dont have time to curl my hair whit my wand.I wish i know whit kits are you using???
The Mom says
I didn’t overly enjoy sleeping in them so I let them air dry. My girls, however, sleep in them and are just fine. It depends on your head and if it is sensitive I guess. I’m sorry I can’t tell you what will be best for your head though!

I have too much hair.I am thinking of ordering theme but i dont know what is better? Start packor kit becaus i saw that somebody has a kit whit all sizes of them:large ,medium and small .How can i get that kit? pls answer ordering theme tomorow
The Mom says
If you have a lot of hair, I would suggest a kit because they come with so many. I’ve never seen a kit with different sizes in them. Ask on their FB page and they should be able to help you. They are really good about stuff like that. Go to their website to see all the kits etc. and how many in each pack and for what lengths of hair. My girls get curls for several days afterward from them. They don’t have issues sleeping in them, but I prefer to just let mine air dry. It depends on how sensitive your head is.
