As most of you have probably pulled your DD’s hair up into half a pony (parting it from ear to ear) for a quick hairdo day, this is just a little spin off that, but looks quite pretty I think. I especially like it, because you can put just about any pretty hair clip or barrette with it to make it as dressy or casual as you like. The clip I used in the first picture was a bit big for Bug’s head, but she wanted me to try it first since it’s so sparkly and looked like diamonds!
Step 1 – Part the hair from ear to ear & divide hair into 2 sections
You can do this with dry or damp hair. I’ve done it both ways. But to get things smoothed I did get the sides damp a bit once I was done. I sometimes part their hair on the side or you can also just have it combed straight back to do this. Whatever you prefer. In these first pix I had her hair parted on the side.
Step 2 – Cross one section over the other and then pull that section up through the hole
It’s like you are tying the beginning of a shoe string knot. In this one I did right over left. Once you pull the hair through that’s it — don’t tie another knot.
Step 3 – Pull it tight
Step 4 – Pull top strand down over the bottom strand
Step 5 – Secure with a barrette or other hair accessory
If you’re worried about the accessory not staying in place, I guess you could anchor with a rubber band first, but I think the whole neat look of this is the hair spread out in the clip. Whatever you put in, it’s got to close around the hair or it obviously won’t do the job! If you want a rounder or wider look to the hair coming down from the top, you could tease it a bit to give it a fuller look. One thing to note – by tying this half knot, one side of the hair tends to be lower than the other – it looks a bit uneven. Being that it bugs me a bit, I just slide a bobbypin up on the side that is lower so it doesn’t look like it’s falling out or something.
I did these last two really quick the other night after she’d had her bath. The girls uncle brought them back a few beautiful hair clips from his trip to China and I thought these worked great for this style. Being that it was bed time, I didn’t bother curling the ends or anything here, but if we were going out I would have taken the time to make it nice and curly.
