I’ve had some people via the blog as well as friends in my neighborhood ask for different ideas on hair for Halloween. If you are a wonder-mom (which I am not) you already have your kids costumes picked out (oh, and of course you sewed them) and you know exactly what you’re doing for their entire costume, make-up and hair (if it’s the type of costume that requires all that stuff.) I don’t mean that in any derogatory way I just have never been on top of Halloween stuff until it’s right upon me! Anyway, since I am a procrastinator I thought for those of you who haven’t decided yet and , maybe some of these could help. Some of these are from old posts – so just click on the link for “how-to’s”, and a few are silly & new.
If you are wanting a princess look (minus the grumpy look & eyes closed!)- There’s always the EverAfter Crown.
Or as I like to call this one – a “fancy schmancy” princess hairdo. Ignore the 2 different flower clips on the sides. Pretend they are the same! You can see the tutorial for this HERE – it’s our version of Giselle’s hairstyle from Enchanted.
Here’s a view from the side.
There’s also Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz:
Then there’s some silly ones that can be used for just about anything. I’ve found that pipe cleaner or an 18 gauge cloth covered wire can do fabulous things in hair for this time of year!
If you want your little DD to be a cat or something that requires some type of “ears” on the top of their head, you can always do something like this. The full cat ear tutorial can be found HERE.
Or you can completely round them and have them like bear ears or something! Bug thought they were Mickey Mouse ears! I didn’t undo these from the pointed ones I did above. I just reshaped them and left the ends tacked down as is. You could also wrap ribbon around them or add them to the braid in the process as well. I didn’t think of that until now, but that’d be something else to “dress” them up a bit too!
This is something I did with Goose’s hair a couple years back for Halloween when she was a clown, except I did a lot more of them. (And of course I can’t get to the pictures right now because they are buried in boxes while we’re finishing our basement) I just braided a bunch of sections starting at the base of her head and added the 18 gauge wire and bent them out all willy-nilly underneath her clown hat.
Since I don’t have costumes out yet, you get the idea with an old circus hat!
Other ideas using wire/pipe cleaner:
** You can also braid them up a bit higher on the head, adding wire and bending them down make them like spider legs. Then you can put “cobwebs”and plastic spiders throughout.
** You can make 2 Indian style braids and make them stick out like Pippy Long Stocking. I started doing that with Bug too today but she was done after the other 2 “experiments” but I assume ya’ll know what she looks like, so you probably don’t need my demo!
** Over at Bowz n’ Stuff, she did a cute & crazy do using pipe cleaner and turned her DD into Cindy-Lou-Who.
** You can do all kinds of fun crazy things by adding the wire giving the hair the ability to bend and shape any way you want! Play around & have fun with it!
Other Misc. Ideas
You can always rat your DD’s hair out all crazy, or crimp it first and then rat it up and out like the Bride of Frankenstein!
Just look around. You’ll be amazed to see all the hair do’s that have been done that you can do or alter for your little one’s hair on Halloween. I don’t know if any of these have helped or given you any ideas, but whatever you end out doing, have a fun & happy Halloween!
